Paris
We had a wonderful few days visiting Paris in January. The Musee d'Orsay (an absolute MUST if you like The Impressionists) you really need to allow almost an entire day (depending on how your legs hold out) there is so much to see. My favourites were the Van Gogh paintings and Monet, especially his hay stacks, painted using beautiful soft complementary colours, fabulous. Of course I just had to see the Pyramid, I know many people dont like it especially as it sits surrounded by beautiful old buildings, but I loved it.
No Artist can go to Paris without seeing The Monmartre with the Painters all avidly doing portraits and selling their wares. They seem to work in even the dimmest of evening light, still capturing any willing passer-by who wants their portrait doing. We sat outdoors watching the world go by and stayed until it was quite dark, painters were packing up by then, but some were still working!
Paris is such a lovely city to visit at any time of year. I very much like to paint buildings, especially those with domes so I was able to take lots of reference photos to use back home. I have some lovely ones of The Sacre Coeur which I intend to do using water-soluble pencils. Those of you who have watched the demonstration I do of St Pauls Dome will no doubt be able to see why I chose this. Cities can offer wonderful subjects for painting and of course Paris is such a fabulous one to visit. I am sure it will feature in a few forthcoming paintings.
Painting on holiday.
I use watercolour pencils to produce some quick sketches on location, then, back at the hotel I add the water. Once home, I then used the sketches to paint some fresh, direct paintings.
It is so exciting to paint directly onto the paper, small wet-in-wet shapes glistening on the surface, then dropping in different colours, creates some wonderful effects. I particularly enjoy these strong tonal contrasts and simple shapes.
Sketch book studies are a vital part of my reference for paintings. Some of these painting sketches are available to see in the May 08 Issue of The Artist magazine.
